How to Write Books in Forgotten Stories

Here is how to write books in Forgotten Stories: visit the lobby Library, choose a Book, and use WRITE with Ink Shards. During an expedition, SIGN uses Ink to activate a Book after you meet its requirements. Keeping these two steps straight helps you get the spells and passives you actually want.

Lobby WRITE vs. In-Run SIGN: How to Write Books in Forgotten Stories

Understanding how to write books in Forgotten Stories starts with two places and two currencies:

Feature Lobby Library: WRITE Active Expedition: SIGN
Location Lobby Library (between expeditions) In-dungeon character menu (during an active run)
Currency Used Ink Shards (permanent account currency) Ink (temporary expedition currency)
What It Does Permanently records the book into your account profile, easing or clearing future unlock requirements. Activates the book's passives, stat bonuses, and spells for that run.
Persistence Permanent across all future runs and characters. Temporary; resets when you leave, escape, or die.
Currency Loss on Death None. Earned Ink Shards are banked dead or alive upon leaving. In-run Ink is lost upon run termination.

When discovering how to write books in Forgotten Stories, visit the Library located in the game lobby between expeditions. Inside, you will find Books available to study permanently by clicking WRITE and paying their listed Ink Shards cost.

Once you know how to write books in Forgotten Stories, you can use the Library to change their requirements for future runs. It does one of two things:

  1. Spawn-Ready Codices (17 Books): The book's in-run milestone is permanently cleared. When your character enters a new expedition, the objective is already marked complete.
  2. Reduced-Threshold Codices (22 Books): The book still retains an in-run challenge, but its stat or combat hurdles are substantially lowered (for example, dropping elemental affinity requirements by 3 points).

Crucial Rule: Spawn-Ready Books Still Cost Ink to Sign!

When learning how to write books in Forgotten Stories, do not assume that writing a spawn-ready book in the lobby makes its benefits active immediately upon entering a run for free.

Important: "Spawn-ready" means the book's unlock milestone is completed on spawn, not that the book is pre-signed. You must still spend in-run Ink to SIGN the book and activate its passives, stats, and spells during that expedition!

Learning how to write books in Forgotten Stories is only the first step. Keep enough in-run Ink to sign those spawn-ready Books when your next adventure begins.

Can You Learn Unwritten Books in an Active Run?

Yes! You do not need to write a book in the lobby before using it in a run.

If you discover an unwritten book during an expedition, you can complete its unwritten objective right then and there. Once the challenge is met:

  1. Open your character book menu.
  2. Click SIGN on the book.
  3. Pay the listed in-run Ink cost.

The book will immediately activate for the remainder of that adventure. Knowing how to write books in Forgotten Stories with lobby Ink Shards is simply a long-term investment that makes accessing that book much easier on subsequent runs.

How to Enhance Books with a Quill in Forgotten Stories

Quills are specialized enhancement items obtained through paths like The Historian inheritance, which grants 1, 3, or 5 Quills alongside starting Ink based on Inheritance level. While resting at camp, you may use a Quill on any owned book currently in your inventory to enhance it, doubling that book's listed stat increases. Each owned book can only be enhanced once.

For example, enhancing Unstoppable Wind doubles its listed +5% Wind Damage and +0.05 Speed bonuses into +10% Wind Damage and +0.10 Speed. Enhancing doubles only the listed attribute increases; it does not double spell damage formulas, passive trigger chances, or debuff applications.

Each stage of book progression serves a distinct purpose:

  • WRITE: Performed in the lobby using Ink Shards to permanently record the book and lower future attribute training requirements.
  • SIGN: Performed during an active run using Ink to activate the book's spells and passive effects.
  • ENHANCE: Performed at camp using a Quill on an owned book to double its listed stat increases on that owned Book.
Unstoppable Wind: compare its listed bonuses before enhancing.Click to enlarge
Unstoppable Wind
Unstoppable Wind stat increases
Before ENHANCE+5% Wind damage+0.05 Speed
After ENHANCE+10% Wind damage+0.10 Speed

One enhancement per owned Book. This comparison shows its stat increases; it does not double Gustwalker’s effects.

Costs and Milestones: How to Write Books in Forgotten Stories

These examples show how to write books in Forgotten Stories with a clear payoff: compare the cost with the requirement you remove or reduce.

Book Name Role & Core Benefit Lobby WRITE Cost In-Run SIGN Cost Unwritten Requirement (First Time) Written Requirement (After Lobby WRITE)
Undying Heart Survival: Once per battle, sets HP to 1 instead of death/knockdown. +2 Max HP. 150 Ink Shards 75 Ink Win a battle with 20% or less remaining health Spawn-Ready: Objective pre-cleared on spawn. Pay 75 Ink to sign.
Small Sea Healing/Cleanse: Grants Cleansing Waters spell. +5% Outgoing Healing, +5% Water Dmg. 200 Ink Shards 100 Ink Reach 10 Order Affinity & 10 Water Affinity Reduced Threshold: Requires 7 Order Affinity & 7 Water Affinity.
Arts of Infusion Spellblade: Grants 4 elemental weapon infusion spells. +2% Resilience, +2.5% Elem Dmg. 200 Ink Shards 100 Ink Reach 10 Order & 5 in Fire, Water, Earth, Wind Reduced Threshold: Requires 7 Order & 4 in Fire, Water, Earth, Wind.

Elemental Knowledge Caster Baseline: Spells gain +1 Penetration. +2.5% Elemental Damage. 60 Ink Shards 30 Ink Cast a Critical Elemental Spell Spawn-Ready: Objective pre-cleared on spawn. Pay 30 Ink to sign.

(Note: These five books illustrate the unlock and threshold reduction system. For the complete catalog of all 39 codices, visit our full Forgotten Stories Books Directory.)

Why Stonewhisperers Guide Is Not Spawn-Ready

Notice that Stonewhisperers Guide costs only 60 Ink Shards, similar to spawn-ready staples like Elemental Knowledge or Blademaster. However, writing it in the lobby changes its requirement from "Mine 10 ores with 5 Runesight" to simply "Gain 5 Runesight." Because it still demands 5 Runesight points during an expedition, it belongs to the reduced-threshold category rather than unlocking on spawn.

Priority Order: Which Books to Write First in Forgotten Stories

Once you know how to write books in Forgotten Stories, start by comparing low-cost 60-shard spawn-ready Books. These eliminate early grind and let you sign powerful passive bonuses right away:

  1. Elemental Knowledge (60 Shards / 30 Ink): Grants +1 Penetration (PEN) to all elemental attacks. Essential for any mage build.
  2. Blademaster or Brutal Combat (60 Shards / 30 Ink): Grants +1 Penetration for slashing or blunt martial weapons.
  3. The Beauty of Flora (60 Shards / 30 Ink): Boosts travel ingredient gathering by +30% and adds +5% incoming healing, fueling your potion crafting.

After securing these baselines, save 150 Shards for Undying Heart to gain a clutch cheat-death safety net for tough boss fights.

Planning Your Build: The 35 Shared Affinity Cap

Before deciding how to write books in Forgotten Stories for your next build, check the affinity budget behind their prerequisites:

  • All 7 elemental affinities and all weapon masteries share a hard cap of 35 combined points.
  • Points cannot be refunded or reallocated during a run without starting over.
  • Use the numeric padlock input on your character sheet to lock an affinity as soon as you hit your target book threshold (such as locking at 7 Order and 7 Water for a written Small Sea). This prevents stray spellcasts from unintentionally consuming points meant for other stats.
